How to Restore Missing Textures After Moving a KeyShot Project to a New Computer

Best practices for migrating projects and resolving missing file errors.

Issue

After moving a KeyShot project to a new computer (due to hardware failure, upgrade, or switching systems), users may encounter error messages like:

Cannot load texture "E:/projects backup/your_project/...png" used by material "Material Name"

These messages often appear when KeyShot can’t locate linked textures or assets used in the original project.

Environment

  • Product: KeyShot Studio

  • Version: All versions

  • Operating Systems: Windows and macOS

Cause

When a KeyShot scene is saved as a .bip file, it references textures, labels, environments, and other assets based on their original file paths. If these files aren't copied over—or if their folder structure changes—KeyShot won't be able to find them, leading to "Cannot load texture" errors.

Resolution (Best Practices)

Recommended: Use a .ksp file to package your project

To avoid missing file errors, always save and move your project as a KeyShot Package (.ksp):

  1. On the original machine (if available), open your scene in KeyShot.

  2. Go to File > Save Package (.ksp).

  3. This creates a folder containing the scene and all linked textures and assets.

  4. Move this .ksp file to the new computer and open it in KeyShot.

If you already moved a .bip file

If you've already transferred a .bip file and are getting texture errors:

  1. Move any missing textures or assets to the new machine.

  2. In KeyShot, go to Edit > Preferences > Folders.

  3. Under the Textures section, click the + icon and add the folders where the textures are now located.

  4. KeyShot will automatically search those folders when opening your project.
