KeyShot Studio SOLIDWORKS Plug-in Support Discontinued

The KeyShot Studio plug-in for SOLIDWORKS is no longer supported. You can still import SOLIDWORKS files directly into KeyShot Studio.

Overview

KeyShot has discontinued support for the SOLIDWORKS plug-in due to changes in the SOLIDWORKS Partner Program. This affects only the plug-in integration; direct import of SOLIDWORKS files into KeyShot Studio is not affected and remains fully supported.

In practice, this means the live-link between SOLIDWORKS and KeyShot Studio is no longer available, but you can continue to bring your SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies into KeyShot Studio through direct file import. The sections below explain how to import your files, how to approximate the previous plug-in workflow, and what to expect from any plug-in installation you already have.

Why was the SOLIDWORKS plug-in discontinued?

Following changes to the SOLIDWORKS Partner Program, KeyShot made the decision to discontinue the plug-in. This decision was not made lightly, and we understand it may impact some users' workflows.

Does this mean I can no longer get my SOLIDWORKS models into KeyShot Studio?

No. You can still bring SOLIDWORKS files into KeyShot Studio using direct file import. KeyShot Studio supports the following SOLIDWORKS file formats natively:

  • .prt / .sldprt (parts)
  • .asm / .sldasm (assemblies)

To import, simply go to File > Import in KeyShot Studio and select your SOLIDWORKS file.

NOTE: We have also removed cached geometry imports as a result.

What did the plug-in offer that direct import does not?

The SOLIDWORKS plug-in provides motion study support and live-linking; the ability to send geometry from SOLIDWORKS directly to an open KeyShot Studio scene and push updates as your model changes. With direct import, you will need to re-import your file manually after making changes in SOLIDWORKS and use the Update Geometry option to apply changes to your existing KeyShot Studio scene.

Is there a workaround to approximate the plug-in workflow?

Yes. You can re-establish a similar workflow by following these steps:

  1. Open your file in SOLIDWORKS and save it as a SOLIDWORKS native file.
  2. Import the file into KeyShot Studio.
  3. When you make changes in SOLIDWORKS, re-export the file.
  4. In KeyShot Studio, import the file once again, and then choose "Update geometry" in the import dialog.

NOTE:  For users who relied on Motion Study animations via the plug-in, export SOLIDWORKS CAD files to .glb and import the file into KeyShot Studio. For further details on the GLB file, click here.

Will the plug-in I already have installed continue to work?

Existing installations may continue to function for now, but we recommend transitioning to direct file import practice as soon as possible.

Where can I get help transitioning using SOLIDWORKS without the plug-in?

If you have questions or need assistance with adapting, we can provide limited support or tips. Please contact our support team by submitting a ticket through the KeyShot Support Portal.
